The superREUSE Manifesto, Graeme Brooker
The superREUSE Manifesto. Graeme Brooker.
The 21st century can be characterised as a time of reactions to a warming planet and responses toward social justice(s). How can the built environment react to these challenges? In response to a world with finite fossil-fuel resources and the discord surrounding their extraction, the future of the built environment will be focussed solely on the re-designation of all existing matter. New-build processes will be an obsoleted approach to making cities, buildings, interiors and objects. Instead, their conception and construction will only be possible through the extraction and redesignation of extant matter. These approaches to working with what is already with us are what I have termed superREUSE.
This book is a manifesto, a proclamation and a declaration of intent that has evolved from decades of my teaching, researching and writing in the field of reuse and discard practices. It is a book that envisions an evolution, a step-change, a progression in approaches to thinking and making places through what has historically been characterised as reuse. SuperREUSE is an amalgam of thoughts, ideas and examples, a mash of data and studies combined as a polemic on the importance and magnitude of working with what is already with us.
